An elderly veteran, weathered and seemingly fragile, slowly stepped toward my family bearing the folded flag in his hands. I was struck by his determination to walk without assistance, to participate in the military honors given my late uncle at the graveside service. It occurred to me the iron will of this veteran must have been with him when he left to serve his country as well...so many years ago.
I was living in New York City at the time of my uncle's death in May of 2001. Little did I know after I wrote this song there would be so much more conflict in this world. I dedicate this song to those who sacrifice everything for our country...
